The Tobermory Food Bank provided thirty-seven Christmas Hampers to those who needed some help in having a Christmas meal. And as always, we could not do this without the amazing help and support of so many individuals, Churches, organizations and businesses.
OPP Auxiliary Officers started us off with their Stuff the Cruiser Food Drive on December 2nd, helped by the Staff at Peacock’s Foodland. This resulted in 335 pounds of food and $118 being donated. And a large cash donation from Bruce Power helped as well.
And of course, it was a privilege and a pleasure to distribute the toys and gifts collected by Northern Bruce Firefighters. It can not be said enough what a caring community we have.
We start the New Year with increased numbers of those facing food-insecurity, as it is with all Food Banks. The rising cost of Food and Housing has seen, many who never faced food-insecurity before, turning to Food Banks to feed their families or themselves. It is not an easy decision to make that first visit to the Food Bank. Often people think that there are others that need it more, or feel embarrassed that they have to come to a Food Bank. But no one should have to make that choice between paying housing and utility costs versus putting food on the table. Our Volunteers are very welcoming and all is held in confidence.
Donations allow the Tobermory Food Bank to continue our work of assisting those most in need in our community. And the Second Harvest/Food Rescue Program that Peacock’s Foodland participates in provides so many items to help those visiting the Tobermory Food Bank.
Our dedicated volunteers turn up to assist in so many ways. Taking a shift when the Food Bank is open, or collecting the Second Harvest from Peacock’s or filling Holiday Hampers. This past year we were very fortunate to have many new volunteers step forward to help. As said, a very caring community.
All the Volunteers from the Tobermory Food Bank wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.
