See You In The Spring, Garden
Submitted by Joan Regan
Every fall I used to cut everything back, then cover the gardens with leaves. So much work! Now I just walk away.
The three gardens out back towards the north side we were told by many are sitting on an old dump site… hmmm… no wonder they were not happy. Now almost everything in them are in containers and it’s known as my “pot garden”. They’re all so much happier now. All of those containers have drainage holes in the bottom (not the sides), filled with soil from Peninsula Out of Doors (not bagged). I mix the soil with some mulch and homemade compost. 55-60 pots in those gardens now. Happy pots = happy gardener.
I also have two large wheelbarrows that are retired now (flat tires, broken handles, etc.). Just have to make up my mind where to put them. Holes drilled already. They’re old, they’re ugly and they will be beautiful.
The gardens are still looking ok – that is until the first frost, then they will get the uglies. They will get knocked down and a bit of mulch put on them and it’s see you in the spring. I can almost hear my house plants singing “yeah, yeah the gardens quit, it’s our turn now!”
Just maybe I can get those violets to bloom. Any tips friends?
Happy Gardening, Happy Fall,
Joni
