The Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association’s winter EcoAdventures programs offer community members and visitors alike a chance to experience the Peninsula from a new perspective. Snowshoe frozen inland lakes, traverse billowy snow-draped landscapes and emerge atop the rugged cliff lined coast of Georgian Bay, see ancient cliff-side trees, learn to recognize tracks of wild animals, or explore trails on fat-tired bikes all with expert local guides who know the Peninsula’s natural and human history.
The adventures are primarily scheduled on weekends, beginning on January 14th, 2023. To see a full list of dates, adventures, and booking information visit www.myecoadventures.ca (gift certificates are also available).
The proceeds from the Ecoadventures programs go towards funding Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association projects. The Biosphere’s current projects include the Six Streams Initiative, a program that works with landowners and farmers to protect streambanks and beds. This project has yielded the installation of over 70 alternative water systems for cattle, and 25km of protective fencing on restored streambanks.
Additionally, this project works with property owners and provides incentive programs for updating septic systems. In 2022, 10 properties were selected, and each received $4,000 to update their tile bed systems.
The Bioremediation Project focuses on the invention of nutrient filters for agricultural runoff and plans on establishing sustainable, year-round jobs on the Peninsula.
Finally, the Biosphere is happy to announce that operations for the Bayside Astronomy program this summer are in the works. Bayside Astronomy is a free astronomy program where expert and amateur astronomers lead stargazing activities, allow attendees to use professional-grade telescopes, and teach about the importance of dark skies, especially on the Bruce Peninsula.
