Happy New Year!! Well, 2022 sure ended with a bang in a lot of snow, much blowing, the highway being closed and ongoing concerns with a variety of illnesses making the rounds. So far in 2023 the weather has warmed up considerably but it has been gloomy, there are still many health concerns and winter promises to return at any minute.
However, we here at Branch 290 are soldiering on and planning events that we hope many of you will want to attend and plan on attending.
Please note that winter hours are now in effect and the branch will be open on Saturdays at 3:00 pm. There are events planned for other days and the branch will be open obviously for those events.
The General Membership Meeting time has changed to 8:00 pm on the 2nd Tuesday of each month (no meetings July or August).
Proposed membership dues increase
The current membership dues have been $45 for Early Bird and $50 for over a decade. At the December 2022 General Membership Meeting there was a motion to increase the membership dues for 2024 Membership (so this fall) to $50 for Early Bird renewal and $60 for new members and if you missed the Early Bird renewal. This motion passed at that meeting will be discussed at the next meeting in January.
Upcoming Events
• Trivia – Friday, January 13 at 7:00 pm. Cost is a $10 donation to the Tobermory Foodbank. The hosts for this night are straight from the Legion Executive; none other than Brad Inglis and Elaine Sinha. Come on out and test your trivia knowledge.
• Breakfast – Sunday, January 15 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Cost is $12/adults; $6/children under 12. On the menu is scrambled eggs, sausages, homefries, toast, o.j, coffee and tea. There is always plenty to eat and remember breakfast is the most important meal of the day; so start it with us.
• Spaghetti Dinner/Hockey Game – Saturday, January 21 starts around 6:00 pm. Cost for the dinner is $15.00. Meal will consist of spaghetti with meat or vegetable sauce, salad, and garlic bread. Come on out and have some good food while cheering for either the Toronto Maple Leafs or the Montreal Canadiens. Bring a bib to keep the spaghetti sauce off of your jersey!
• Meat Draws – every Saturday at 4:30 pm. All are welcome (ages 19 to 100); try to win a dinner. Cost is $7.00 for 3 draws, plus the bonus draw. Try to become the lucky table for 2023.
• Darts for Fun – every Thursday at 7:30 pm. Cost is $2.00 plus 10 cents to the duck and the duck is hungry. If darts isn’t your thing, come on out and use the pool table or shuffleboard.
• Euchre – Friday, January 27 at 7:00 pm. Cost is $5.00. All card sharks are welcome.
• General Membership Meeting – Tuesday, February 14 at 8:00 pm. Come on out to have your say; if we don’t hear from you at this meeting then your issue is a non-issue.
• Bingo – Every Monday at 1:00 pm, at the Community Centre. Come on out for a fun afternoon.
Branch Hours are Saturday from 3:00 to 9:00 pm unless otherwise noted above by an event.
