Summer is in full swing; the town is as busy as ever and the Legion has many things on the go too.
Silent Auction for Inuit wool wall hangings
The Legion has been very fortunate to receive a donation of 3 beautiful Inuit wool wall hangings. The artist is Monica Pingushat, who resides in Arviat, Nunavut. Arviat is an Inuit community of approximately 1,500 people located on the western shore of Hudson’s Bay.

Ms. Pingushat has stitched her name into each piece in her native Inuktut. Each wall hanging is exquisite and demonstrates the incredible stitching skills of the Inuit women; as well as depicting images of tradition, culture and natural environment of the Inuit.
The largest (62”x 28.5”) depicts a Dog Team, next depicts The Seal Hunt (31”x 26”) and the smallest (30.5”x 20.5”) depicts Skin Stretching.
The Executive has decided to hold a Silent Auction over the summer for these amazing works of art. They will be on display at the branch and at bingo at the Community Centre on Wednesday evenings.
Please take a look and hopefully place a bid.
Dunks Bay Veterans Memorial
We have run out of room on our current memorial stone to add the names of some of our local veterans who have recently passed on and the paving stone base of the monument is also in rough condition and needs replacing.
Within the next 12 months the Legion is looking to add a new stone to the monument which will accommodate an additional 30 veterans’ names and replace the base of the monument with a new concrete pad. The estimated cost of this project is $5,000, and although the legion has some funds earmarked for the project, we are well short of funds required to complete it.
Our veterans need to be honoured and we are looking for assistance from the community to help raise the additional funds needed to make this happen. If you are interested in donating to this worthwhile project, you can attend the legion in person during business hours Thursday, Friday, Saturday 3:00-9:00 or by e-transfer to donate@tobermorylegion.org Please put in the memo section that this donation is for the
Ruck2Remember
On July 5th, Branch 290 became the starting point for the Ruck2Remember. The annual hike changes locations each year and raises funds for homeless veterans, working with existing charities to support the Veteran and first responder communities. This initiative is in support of the Legion program called “Operation: Leave the Streets Behind.” Which aims to get and keep veterans off the streets.
This year they are hiking from Tobermory to Niagara Falls covering all 900 kms of the Bruce Trail! It was a rainy send off, but filled with excitement for the trek ahead. They were joined on the trail by District C Chairman Eric Ross and by Branch 290 President, Judy Hurst.
Special thanks to Kathryn Forbes for coming out and Piping off the hikers, and to the Crowsnest Pub and Shipwreck Lee’s for providing dinners for the trekkers after long days on the trail.
It would be great if anyone is able to donate to this worthwhile cause, go to https://www.gofundme.com/f/road-to-recovery-9-ruck-the-bruce. The goal this year is $500,000; let’s help them make this goal a reality.
