The Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association has again TAKEN ACTION to improve water quality on the Northern Bruce. We have now supported the replacement of 40 failing septic systems by writing and then managing grants gratefully received from the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks. To be eligible for the $4,000 contribution these septic systems needed to be negatively influencing a stream, the lake or other watercourse and within the Six Streams project area. As the Northern Bruce does not have a septic re-inspection program, we have also covered the cost for septic system inspections of over 100 properties. We have also built awareness of how to properly maintain a septic system by offering over 10 workshops!
By concentrating our efforts in one geographic area, the cumulative impact of our restoration efforts is amplified. When our septic work is combined with our and the farming community’s efforts to provide alternate watering systems for close to 6,000 cattle, and reduce soil erosion all in the same Six Streams area, our measurements tell us water quality on the Bruce is improving.
We are hopeful that our septic system grant application for next year will be approved and we can help another 10 homeowners. Please cross your fingers and your toes and eyes too!
