Tobermory, ON – As a safety precaution during this time of the Covid 19 pandemic, the Church Council of St. Edmund’s Anglican Church, Tobermory has officially cancelled all church services up to and including October 4th 2020.

Church services for the period from Victoria Day Weekend until Thanksgiving are traditionally offered by visiting clergy from elsewhere in the province and out of country. This will not be happening in 2020. Along with following restrictions around the size of groups allowed to meet, and the request by all levels of government and the Peninsula Family Health Team to encourage potential visitors to limit non-essential travel and stay in their primary residences is being respected. Concern for potential community spread of Covid 19 and an undue burden on local health facilities have led to the decision to suspend services. The Church Council considers the health and safety of parishioners and the community, as well as that of the visiting clergy to be of paramount importance.

The Rev. Perry Chuipka, Rector of St. Edmund’s reassures the community however that despite no services, the church is not closed for business. “Our church doors may not be open but our hearts are. We have decided to ring the church bell often, as well as on Sunday at 10:00 am. We have also installed a sign at the church with information about our on-line services.” Rev. Chuipka also encouraged those with pastoral concerns to contact him at 519-534-2607. For other issues contact the church office at 519-534-1604 or email bruceparish@bmts.com.

Also cancelled this year is the popular St. Edmund’s Annual Yard Sale which had been scheduled for mid-July. A huge undertaking that normally hosts several hundred visitors as well as dozens of volunteers over a week-long preparation period, it has been determined that for 2020, the responsible action is to cancel the event. Status of the sale for 2021 will be publicized in the future.

On-line services are being held each Sunday at 10:30 a.m., originating from St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Wiarton with Rev Chuipka officiating. St. Edmund’s is part of the Anglican and Lutheran Ministries of the Bruce Peninsula (laamb) which has seven congregations from Sauble Beach to Tobermory. To view the online service or previous services go to the website www.laamb.ca and follow instructions.

Rev. Chuipka also indicated another area of concern is the strain that keeping the church closed will put on the church budget. It is possible to continue donations by contacting the church office to make arrangements. Please see contact information above.
