Stopped in Awe: News from Tobermory United
Submitted by Rev. Sheryl Spencer
We may not have anything like the Brazilian Carnival or the New Orleans Mardi Gras on Shrove Tuesday, but we do have the Tobermory United Annual Pancake Supper! This is a much-loved community event held at the Tobermory Community Centre, where one can celebrate the last day before Lent begins with special treats – pancakes, sausages, baked beans, fruit and desserts! Not only that, but it’s an evening out with friends and neighbours in the middle of winter, when social gatherings can be few and far between.
For at least fifteen years, Heather Munn has been coordinating preparations for this event. “I’ve been doing this a long time!” Heather says. “When I first started, I worked in the summertime, so this was something I could do for the church in the off season.” Heather leads the preparations so that with a lot of volunteer help, 150 people can sit down for supper and be heartily fed. She makes it look easy!
The Tobermory United Annual Pancake Supper will be held March 4 at the Tobermory Community Centre from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission is by donation, and volunteers are welcome! To volunteer, please call 519-596-2394, or e-mail tobermoryunitedchurch@eastlink.ca.
Rev. Sheryl Spencer is the minister at Tobermory United Church.
