Christmas Season at The Tobermory Food Bank

Submitted by Linda Godhue

As the Christmas season approaches there are some important dates to keep in mind regarding the Tobermory Food Bank. On Saturday December 7th the OPP cruiser will be outside Peacock’s Foodland for the annual Stuff the Cruiser event. Over the past years this event has helped so much in stocking our shelves for subsequent winter months. Thank you so much to the OPP volunteers who wait outside in the cold to receive the donations. Also, to the great staff at Peacock’s who prepare the numerous donation bags that are available for purchase in many sizes.

On Saturday December 14th the Food Bank will be offering hotdogs and hot chocolate by donation before, during, and after the Santa Claus Parade in Tobermory. We will be outside the Community Centre while the parade is gathering and after. We will be outside Peacock’s before and during the Parade.

On Thursday December 19th, we will be packing and distributing Christmas Hampers. Pick up time is between 11:00 a.m. and 12 noon at the Meeting Place. If you need a Hamper or know of someone who does, please call Linda at 519-596-2333.

As in past years the Tobermory Food Bank will be distribute the toys and gifts that the Northern Bruce Peninsula Fire and Emergency Services collect for those families that need assistance in having a Christmas for their children, from infant up to and including 16 years old. Again, please call Linda at the above number to register.

Although we are looking ahead to Christmas, we had a very good fall with many donations. This year as in the past years, the seasonal residents along with the staff at Summer House Park donated food and cash to the Tobermory Food Bank. This initiative was started by one of the seasonal residents, Mimi Riddell, and Darcy and staff quickly joined the project and donated food and cash as well.

We are so supported not only by full-time residents, but seasonal ones as well and of course the local Churches and organizations.

In a recent article we put out the invitation to become a volunteer at the Tobermory Food Bank. We have had a great response with several folks offering to join our merry band of volunteers. We do have fun while working to assist those most in need in our community. If you have any questions regarding the Tobermory Food Bank, please call Linda at 519-596-2333 or Jim at 519-375-7010.
