Tobermory, ON — After 45 years as a cornerstone of the Tobermory community, The Sweet Shop has officially been sold by longtime owners Dr. George Harpur and Mike Goman to Greg Lorch and Debbie Smits, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the beloved local icon.
Established in 1980, The Sweet Shop quickly became a must-visit destination for generations of visitors and locals alike, offering nostalgic charm, hand-crafted treats, and a warm welcome that defined summer in Tobermory. Under the stewardship of Dr. Harpur and Mr. Goman, and the day-to-day management of Helen McFarlane, it has grown into a symbol of fun, tradition, and community spirit.
“We are thrilled that The Sweet Shop will continue,” said Dr. Harpur. “Greg and Debbie have a deep appreciation for Tobermory and have been local cottagers for many years. We couldn’t be happier passing the torch to a family who shares our love for the community and its traditions.” Interestingly, Naomi Lorch, Greg and Debbie’s daughter, has worked at the store for the past several summers, gaining valuable work experience while advancing towards her university degree. Naomi is currently helping manage The Sweet Shop under the direction of Helen McFarlane, the store’s long-time General Manager. “This has been a great opportunity for Naomi to gain valuable life experiences. We hope to continue to provide wonderful job opportunities with our future youth” said Greg Lorch.
As part of the sale, the parties have agreed that Helen, George, and Mike will continue to operate the business through to the end of this season and then will assist in making a smooth transition of operations to the Lorch family.
The Lorch family brings with them fond memories and longstanding ties to the region, ensuring that the unique flavour—both literal and figurative—of The Sweet Shop will continue to delight customers under their care.
“We’re honored to continue what George, Mike, and Helen have built,” said Greg Lorch. “It’s more than just a store—it’s a part of the Tobermory experience, and we’re excited to keep the magic alive for years to come.”
With its legacy intact and a new generation at the helm, The Sweet Shop remains open for business, ready to welcome customers old and new with the same spirit of sweetness and hospitality that made it a local legend.
