On a very stormy December 23rd, the Tobermory Food Bank gave Christmas Hampers to 33 households in the Tobermory catchment area. For those who could not make arrangements to pick them up, volunteers delivered them. And in those Hampers donated candies and treats were added that made the Hampers more festive. Also, it was our pleasure to arrange for the distribution of toys and gifts collected by Northern Bruce Firefighters.

The donations leading up to Christmas were gratefully received. The Bruce Power Corporation and the Bruce Power Workers Union have, for a number of years, sent an annual donation to support the Tobermory Food Bank. But the local support we receive from individuals, organizations and businesses is not only appreciated but vital to our work. It really is a community helping neighbours, those who are facing food insecurity and need assistance to feed themselves or their family. We have seen client visits increase in the past year and the beginning of 2025 indicates that will continue.

We are also grateful to Peacock’s Foodland for the donation bin for Food Bank donations located just inside the entrance. The number of donations just from that location has made a huge difference to what we have on our shelves. The Second Harvest from Peacock’s helps so very much as well.

On December 14th, those donating at a Peacock’s cashier would have their donation matched by Sobeys Inc. We do not yet have the total amount that resulted in, but we should have it in time for the next column.

Our work goes on the whole year, and we rely on donations to operate the Tobermory Food Bank. We are often asked what is needed; a list of most needed grocery items can be found on our website tobermoryfoodbank.ca , as well as how to donate by cheque, e-transfer or through Canada Helps. If you are donating grocery items, perhaps consider donating pet food, as some clients have family pets.
