Tobermory Legion to Mark Decoration Day

As this is being written we have just learned that the emergency measures in Ontario have been extended until June 30. Which means that social distancing is still in place with no more than 5 people gathering together. However, life does continue on and events, celebration and/or commemoration should still be observed if for nothing else than our own peace of mind. We, however, just need to become creative when undertaking such endeavours. So, with this in mind…

Decoration Day

This important day is still being honoured but in a different fashion than in the past. On Sunday, June 14th at 11:30 am five members of the branch (forming a colour party along with Padre Brad Inglis) will march on to Dunks Bay Cemetery to mark Decoration Day. We are working on getting someone to film it so that it can be broadcast on the Legion’s Facebook page and hopefully, the Website. The Flags will be placed on our veterans’ gravesites on the previous Sunday as usual. If you do attend this service, we ask that all social distancing measures be observed.

A Challenge Has Been Issued

In view of the NHL stating that hockey playoffs are going to resume, Brad Inglis (not the Padre, the other one) has issued a challenge to any and all hockey fans. The challenge is for each round of the playoffs that your team is in, $50.00 is donated to the Legion and if your team takes the Stanley Cup, $100.00 is then donated to the Legion. The playoff schedule is yet to be determined by the NHL but we have rabid (bored?) hockey fans donating in their team’s name.

To make a donation, e-transfer to donate@tobermorylegion.org. Make sure that you include in the message what team you are rooting for. So far we have Leafs – 8; Canadiens – 7; Oilers – 1; Jets – 1.

Now we just need the playoffs to start!

Thank you to Brad for thinking of this challenge; it gives a little bit of normalcy in an odd way and the winner here is the Branch.

Please stay safe, healthy and sane.
