Over 110 people celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) on July 17 (the actual anniversary date) at the Tobermory Legion. RCL’s mission is “To serve Veterans, including serving military and RCMP members and their families, to promote Remembrance and to serve our Communities and our Country.” (https://www.legion.ca/who-we-are)

Veterans Affairs Canada provided significant funding for us to undertake the celebration. Thanks to Rick Lane who oversaw the organization of the party including obtaining the funding. Dan and Colleen Mackey along with Rob Davis supervised the food, kitchen and bar-b-que, which included Dan’s famous smoked brisket. We also served a variety of salads jumbo hot dogs and, of course, a birthday cake.

Marylou Bassford, Linda Bain and Kim McIvor helped in the kitchen and serving the food. Thanks also to our beloved bartender Raelene, assisted by Angie Russell, who made a busy night go smoothly.

Great music over the course of the night was provided by country singer Kurtis Oblak and our local band “Hwy 6 Revisited”. Hwy 6 Revisited, headed by Brad Gibbs, was in excellent tune and introduced new member Madyo Pradhan who did an excellent cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Boxer”.

All-in-all, it was a great celebration and Branch 290 continues to be very active and a centerpiece of the Tobermory Community.
