The 2025-26 Curling season started with a successful Learn to Curl and Registration Night on October 20 and from that we are running eight sheets of ice for league curling.

Our first draw started October 27 with eight teams curling early on Monday evenings from 4 to 6pm and another group of eight teams from 7 to 9pm. Our second draw started on November 24 with the same number of teams.

On October 29 some of our club members attended a curling clinic in Wiarton. The clinic was run by Marty Thompson, a Lion’s Head native who learned to curl in the Lion’s Head arena. He is now a competitive mixed doubles curler and a Curling Canada Teaching Professional. While in the area he also went to the local school and did some indoor curling training with some of the students. This may have triggered some youthful interest in curling as we have a boys team coming to the arena on Monday afternoons to practice. We are pleased to provide some equipment for them and grateful to a number of our experienced curlers who are helping out with instruction.

The first draw in the early game was won by Andy Haayema and his team, Brenda Nelson, Patti Hellyer and Jim Williams. Our President, Brenda Nelson presented Andy’s team with gift certificates to the TruFood Cafe.

Doug Hill’s team came first in the 7-9pm time for Draw 1 and received Foodland gift cards.

On December 1 our club members were invited to bring food items for the local food bank. As a result of the generosity of our club three large totes of non-perishables will be delivered to the Food Bank.

Our final game of Draw 2 will be December 15 and then we break for Christmas, but will be back for Draw 3 on January 5th, followed by the RONA sponsored Bonspiel on Saturday, January 10. A bonspiel is a full day of fun starting with coffee and snacks at 8am, on the ice at 9am for eight ends, a break for the included lunch and back to the ice for the 2nd game. Then the scores are tallied and the bonspiel winning team declared. The Rotary Club provides bar services throughout the day.

We extend an invitation to anyone who would like to curl to come out to the arena in Lion’s Head on a Monday evening and watch, or perhaps be a spare if there is an opening that night. We always end the evening with snacks and a social time and you would be very welcome to join us.
