Tobermory, Ontario – June 17, 2025 – If you own a property adjacent to Fathom Five National Marine Park and are considering a shoreline or in-water project, you must obtain a permit from Parks Canada. Parks Canada has the authority to manage and regulate in-water or shoreline alteration projects that extend below the high-water line.

Parks Canada is a recognized leader in conservation and takes actions to protect the ecological integrity of national parks and national marine conservation areas and contribute to the recovery of species at risk. Examples of projects that require a Parks Canada permit include the installation, repair, or maintenance of docks and boatlifts, marine rails, waterlines and sub-marine cable, mooring buoys, landscaping and swim rafts.

By engaging with Parks Canada on proposed shoreline and in-water projects, landowners will be supporting conservation efforts through good environmental planning and design. Not only does working with Parks Canada ensure projects meet all Fathom Five National Marine Park legislative and policy requirements, it also provides a free, professional opinion on your shoreline habitat and building sustainable and climate change resilient infrastructure. Parks Canada’s goal is to work with landowners to support conservation goals that, together, help sustain these habitats for generations to come.
