June has quickly come and gone. The Summer Solstice has arrived and ushered in the summer in earnest. The month started out with the Lion’s Head Hospital Auxiliary (LHHA) 1001 Perennials Plant Sale. Fortunately, the weather co-operated, and enthusiastic gardeners came out in droves to scoop up new additions to their gardens. Not many plants were left, but you’ll be happy to know that you can snap up some at the Annual Yard Sale.

Yes, the Annual Yard Sale. Work is underway to organize the multitude of donations that the community so graciously brings to us. It is one of those situations where ‘many hands make light work’. Well, not exactly light work. We do rely on our strongest members to arm wrestle the heavier items into the arena. The rest of us distribute and organize items of all sizes, shapes and categories into their appropriate spots. Remember to drop off your donations at the back of the Lion’s Head arena Friday, June 4 from 8:00 am until noon. The doors open Saturday, July 5, promptly at 8:00 am until 1:00 pm and again Sunday, July 6, 10:00 am until noon.

For your shopping pleasure on Saturday the Lions Club is running a Food Booth and musical accompaniment will be provided by Brian, Brian and Arnie.

Again, please review the list of items that we cannot accept due to health and safety. We want to make sure that our volunteers and our shoppers do not run the risk of any injury or mishap. The list is included at the bottom of the article.

If you want to get a start on your summer reading and just can’t wait to pore through the collection of books at the Yard Sale take a gander over to the LHHA Used Bookstore. The entrance is located at the back of Christ Church on Main Street, Lion’s Head. The selection of books is quite extensive, and you should be able to find a book, or two, or three to suit your interests. And it’s a lovely spot to escape the heat. The bookstore is open every Saturday, 11:00 am until 2:00 pm. Additional hours will be announced for July.

Do you ever wonder where the funds go that LHHA with our community raises? This past year funds purchased a dishwasher for the hospital, a transport ventilator and ADD (automated dispensing device). The ADD, through computer technology, controls storage, dispensing, tracking and documentation of patient medications, greatly increasing patient safety. The portable transport ventilator keeps patients stable when being transported, especially during emergency scenarios. Like all things medical these items are extremely expensive and not covered by The Ontario Ministry of Health. Equipment to enhance patient care and safety frequently necessitates local communities stepping up and raising the necessary funds. Without our incredibly supportive community the LHHA couldn’t provide these necessary funds.

As a final reminder, please be kind and remember we cannot accept the following items for the Annual Yard Sale: Mattresses, Propane or gasoline tanks, Knives of any description (that includes kitchen and sporting), Weapons (of any kind), Baby cribs or car seats, Computers including monitors and keyboards, Televisions, Clothing and shoes and boots (we do hold a separate clothing drive on September 13 so please hold on to donations until then), sleeper lounges due to the mattresses, Major Appliances and Exercise equipment such as treadmills, stationary bikes or rowing machines.

Photo: Each year Brightshores recognizes volunteers for their years of service. This year the following Lion’s Head Hospital Auxiliary members were recognized (L-R) – Kris Matheson (3 years), Beth Bruin (3 years), Carol Barr (10 years), M.J. Amy (3 years), and Peggy Beghetto (3 years). Absent from photo; Dianna Bruvelaitis, Margaret Campigotto, George Hambleton and Betty Hastings, all with 5 years. Thank you for everything you do.
