On June 4th residents of Tobermory reported seeing an RCMP Black Hawk helicopter flying at low altitude over the peninsula. The helicopter landed at Tobermory Municipal airport and remained there overnight, before taking off again the morning of June 5th. The RCMP confirmed it has deployed 2 Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopters to assist in patrolling the Canada-US border.

A spokesperson from the RCMP Central Region (Ontario) explained, “Should you see a helicopter on patrol, it does not mean there is a specific threat or danger in the area. The RCMP understands that noise from Black Hawk helicopters may raise concerns in affected communities. We are committed to minimize noise disruptions whenever possible. However, they [helicopters] will often be at low altitude and at slow speeds, which will make them visible.”

The helicopters have RCMP members that are specially trained to operate within the Black Hawks.

“The RCMP is committed to serving and protecting Canadians, including securing our borders from inbound and outbound criminal threats in all domains: air, land and water.” said the spokesperson.
