Stopped in Awe: News from Tobermory United

Submitted by Rev. Sheryl Spencer

Many, many thanks to everyone who supported Tobermory United’s annual Spring Chicken BBQ! More than 400 dinners were prepared and served, most through our drive-through format at Tobermory United, but with over 100 dinners being delivered to folks in Lion’s Head! Many thanks to Peninsula Parcel, Peacock’s Foodland and all the volunteers who make this such a beloved community event. The BBQ is an organizational feat of list-making and calculating amounts, but with systems in place carried on from many years ago, the skill and efficiency is a wonder to behold! The summer Chicken BBQ will take place Saturday August 2. Watch for details!

Many thanks also to all those who dropped off their donations on Victoria Day weekend to the Tobermory Thrift Shop. Our walls are bursting, and we are so thrilled and grateful! The Thrift Shop will open its doors for sales on June 7. Donations will continue to be received throughout the summer on Mondays and Tuesdays from 1-4 p.m., and the Thrift Shop will be open for sales each week Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 1-4 p.m.

There are still a few spots for Thrift Shop volunteers. Volunteers are invited to a lunch and an orientation on June 6 at noon at Tobermory United. For more information, 519-596-2394 or tobermoryunitedchurch@eastlink.ca.

On June 8, Tobermory United will join in celebrations that are taking place all across the country to honour the 100th anniversary of the United Church of Canada. What were known originally as the Harbour and Settlement churches in Tobermory were both Methodist congregations, but without too much fuss, in 1925, they joined the union of denominations that formed the United Church of Canada. Rev. Hugh Wilson was the minister at the time, and his descendants continue to call Tobermory home! The United Church has much to celebrate in its 100 years, but there is also lament, such as its involvement with residential schools. The service will acknowledge both. A potluck lunch will be served following the service.

On June 15th, Tobermory United will host all the Tobermory churches for Chi-Cheemaun Sunday, a service to bless the boats of Tobermory and honour our nautical history and nature. Musical guests will be the Ladies of Note! All are welcome! All services are at 10:30 a.m.

Rev. Sheryl Spencer is the minister at Tobermory United Church.
