SERVICE – WE ASSIST, NURTURE, SUPPORT
Submitted by Bonnie Warder
The weather has been amazing! On the 23rd of October, the SWANS completed their commitment to clean the roadside from Cherryhill Road to the Lindsay Tract Trails along Highway 6. It was a very windy day but no rain and fairly mild, so not too bad of conditions. There were 8 SWANS that participated, finishing in 1.5 hours. They collected 9 bags of garbage, 5 bags of recycling items, a car bumper and some odd sheets of metal. Thanks to the members that were able to help with the cleanup.
There were still plenty of cigarette butts! Starting August 15th, Canada became the first country to put warning labels on individual cigarettes. The warnings include messages like “cigarettes cause cancer” and “cigarettes cause impotence”. This is part of the national anti-tobacco strategy but there are no messages on them that warn of the environmental issues they cause.
This continual problem is so discouraging, especially when the very next day after all the hard work of the SWANS picking up the roadside garbage, there were 3 empty cans tossed out near our property.
November is a time to recognize and give thanks for the courageous men and women that fought to provide us with the freedoms that we enjoy. The SWANS will purchase a wreath and be present at the service at the Lion’s Head Cenotaph on November 11th . The Legion members do a great job.
Enjoy the fall colours and if you have an interest in joining the SWANS, please contact Roberta Mielhausen at 519-374-4110.
