The Tobermory Food Bank began the season of Thanksgiving with the distribution of 30 hampers that ensured everyone who wanted one, was able to have a celebratory meal. And thanks to a donation from the Friends of Bruce Peninsula Parks, some extra treats were added to the hampers.
Many thanks as well to Peacock’s Foodland who packed bags for sale that could be donated at the store leading up to Thanksgiving and are still available. Before and after Thanksgiving some very generous cash donations came to the Food Bank which help so much in the purchase of the items that go into the hampers.
And once again Summer House Park collected cash and grocery items for donation to the Food Bank. This has been an annual occurrence for many years. This year it was 70kg of food and $500 cash. Many thanks to the Summer House Staff and seasonal residents.
Just before Thanksgiving the Tobermory Food Bank, along with other local Food Banks, were able to receive donated grocery items collected by the Wiarton Salvation Army. And on October 19th a group of Food Bank volunteers had the opportunity to prepare breakfast for the Annual Ladies Breakfast at the monthly Men’s Breakfast. We are very grateful for the most generous donation we received for our efforts.
As you see, the Tobermory Food Bank has much to be thankful for as we head into the winter months where there are increased visits. Over the past 2 years we have seen a greater need as the growing cost of living has resulted in more people facing food insecurity. We increasingly hear about how food insecurity has grown and the damaging effect it has on those facing it – affecting their physical and mental health and well-being. A recent report on Food Affordability and Food Insecurity from Grey Bruce Public Health reflects the impact of the rising cost of living and how it affects so many people. Their media release about this report was in the last edition of the Peninsula Press.
So, the work of Food Banks goes on assisting those most in need in our community. This work of the Tobermory Food Bank could not continue without the amazing support it receives from individuals, organizations, churches and businesses. There are many ways to support the Tobermory Food Bank, either by donation or by volunteering, and that information is available by visiting our website Tobermory Food Bank.ca
