And The Warmth Continues

Submitted by Bill Caulfeild-Browne

Like pretty much all of Ontario, Tobermory had yet another month well above historical norms. The mean temperature of 17.4C was nearly three degrees warmer than might be expected. The highest the mercury reached was 26.7C on the 15th and, unusually, the lowest, 9.2C, was at the end of the first week. Areas around Thunder Bay actually saw frost in the early hours of the 7th. My wife and I were camping on Lake Superior and woke up to 4C that morning. By the end of the day it reached 25C.

That may sound exceptional but a few decades ago the Bruce would often see light frost in early September.

The month was drier than normal, too – just 57mm against a norm of 79mm. This was also true for all of Ontario. Sunshine, on the other hand was abundant, giving us the longest warm spell of the last few months.

There were no significant weather events in the month – it was simply a lovely 30 days. October is starting out the same sunny way and the folks at Climate Change Canada foresee another above-average month. We shall see!
