Bruce Men’s Shed News
Media Release
As fall arrives there are two migrations south; the bird migration is well underway already, soon to be followed by the snowbirds heading to warmer climes. In this shoulder season we will try to engage as many men as we can. Summer projects at home are nearing completion and before putting everything away for the winter we can find time to take on some worthy community projects.
One project we have taken on is to build a small shelter for the Bruce Peninsula Family Centre in Lion’s Head. They have two large carts they use year-round to take their charges out on daily walks around town and onto the beach. The carts have been a great addition for them but storage space is at a premium. This small shelter will allow the carts to be stored nearer to the door and not take up valuable space in the existing sheds. Bruce Men’s Shed will have a small team put together to build this on site before the snow starts to pile up.
I recently did a presentation on What is a Men’s Shed for a group called Ontario Flying Farmers who held an annual meeting in Tobermory. A group of 25 gathered and had presentations from Bruce Peninsula Biosphere and Bruce Men’s Shed. A number of good questions were brought forward and the presentation well received. If your group is interested to learn more about the Men’s Shed movement please let us know.
In that vein, Men’s Sheds Ontario is looking to establish a number of “Ambassadors” or “Outreach Guys” across the province. Men’s Sheds Ontario is based in one of three Sheds in the Ottawa area and they travel to assist startups and promote new Sheds. There are currently 21 Sheds in the province ranging from starting to nine years old. The Ambassador would be a person or persons from existing locations who would spend two to three days a month reaching out to towns, groups, councils, mayors to promote and help in establishing new locations. If you are interested in learning more about this please contact us as the information below.
At our Monday coffee recently, a local resident brought in a dehumidifier that wasn’t working properly and our guys were able to get it fixed up for her. If you have a small tool or appliance that you need help with, please drop in to see if we can help repair it.
Every Monday morning we meet for coffee 9am-11am, and our monthly meetings are the third Saturday morning of the month, same time. You don’t need to be a member to drop in for coffee. Both are held at Canadian Legion Branch 202 on Highway 6 just north of Ferndale. Doors open at 8:30, all are welcome.
If you would like further information on how to get involved with the Men’s Shed movement, please contact us at brucemensshed@gmail.com or call Gerry at (519) 793–3005. There are no membership fees.
