Rotary Club of Northern Bruce Peninsula News
Submitted by Rob Hiscott
Rotarian Wendell Thomson is preparing for his second annual 60+ kilometre walk to fundraise for local health care. This year, Wendell will walk from Pike Bay to Sauble Beach (on Tuesday, September 10th), and return from Sauble Beach to Pike Bay (on Wednesday, September 11th), with a goal of raising $50,000 for Brightshores – Lion’s Head Hospital to ‘keep health care close to home’.
Once again, Wendell’s Walk is proudly sponsored by Bluewater RV Sales Ltd. of Wiarton, providing a support vehicle for Wendell as he walks the road shoulders between Pike Bay and Sauble Beach. Tobermory Press has prepared and donated a banner that will be displayed on the support vehicle so people will know when they come up on Wendell and the walkers what is happening. Please donate generously to ‘Wendell’s Walk for Health Care’ on-line (www.bphfoundation.com), via e-transfer (to admin@bphfoundation.com), by phone (519) 534-5856, or mail (to Bruce Peninsula Hospitals Foundation, 369 Mary Street, Wiarton, Ontario, N0H 2T0), and please include your full mailing address with your donation to receive a charitable donation receipt.
Rotary Exchange Student – Host Families Urgently Needed!
As reported in the last Rotary article, our Club is sponsoring an international student from Taiwan for the upcoming school year (2024-25), and is urgently searching for families in Northern Bruce Peninsula that would be willing to host the student for three or four months in either Fall or Winter terms.
Exchange student Matthew is from Taiwan where he lives with his parents and two younger siblings, enjoys playing sports (especially basketball which he has played since elementary school), and plans to pursue legal studies at university after completing high school.
If you would like more information on hosting our exchange student, please contact Rotarian Cathryn Buckley by email (cathryn.buckley@yahoo.ca) or by phone (519-596-8188).
Fourth Rotary Pancake Breakfast of the Season September 1
Our final scheduled community Pancake Breakfast of this year will be held on the Labour Day Holiday weekend, on Sunday, September 1st, from 9:00 to 11:30 AM at the Rotary Pavilion adjacent to Lion’s Head Beach. Our Pancake Breakfasts always include delicious pancakes with real maple syrup, scrambled eggs, pork sausages, hash browns, and beverages of coffee/tea and orange juice.
The cost per breakfast is $15.00 for adults, or $7.00 for children aged 12 and under. Rotary now accepts payment in the form of cash or debit/credit card and we encourage patrons to bring their own plates and cutlery to help reduce waste from our breakfast event. In addition to picnic table seating just outside the Rotary Pavilion, there is also an option for breakfast pick-up for those wishing to take away their breakfast.
We hope to see you at our final community Pancake Breakfast of the season!

Oktoberfest at Rotary Hall September 28
Your local Rotary Club and Tagwerk Bier are proud to sponsor the second annual Oktoberfest community event, scheduled for Saturday, September 28th to be held at Rotary Hall in Lion’s Head. Proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards Rotary-supported causes including our multiple student scholarships and improvements to Rotary Hall!
This one-day Oktoberfest event will begin at 1:00 PM and run until midnight. Daytime activities (1:00-6:00 PM) will have a family-focus, with outdoor events (organized hike by the Bruce Trail Association for all ages), BBQ and beer tent. The Ticket-only evening event (7:00 PM to midnight) will take place inside Rotary Hall. The Oktoberfest-themed food will continue to be available for purchase (with menu options including pretzels, sausages, sauerkraut and strudel), and Tagwerk Biers will be featured (Oktoberfest draught), along with wine, ciders, coolers and soft drinks being available – Rotarians will be tending bar and BBQ grills throughout the event.
Music will continue through the evening with the band Road Rash playing live, along with adult games (including the very popular beer stein hold contest and a 50/50 draw), and general Oktoberfest fun!
Tickets for the evening portion of Oktoberfest can be purchased on-line (at lionsheadoktoberfest.com) for $27.96 per adult ticket. As well, a limited number of tickets will be available for purchase at the door, but everyone is encouraged to get their tickets early as this was a very popular sell-out event when held last year!
50/50 tickets are now available from any Rotarian at $5.00 each with a total of up to 600 tickets being sold and a prize of up to $1,500 for the winning ticket! We hope to see you at the second annual Oktoberfest community event!
