You Came, You Shopped

Summer started off with a bang at the Lion’s Head Hospital Auxiliary (LHHA) Annual Garage Sale. What an incredibly supportive community we are blessed to have. Numerous treasures changed hands and much needed funds were raised.

Thanks go to the Lion’s Head Lions Club who provided BBQed peameal bacon, sausages and beverages at the food booth. Shoppers were able to take a load off their feet while snacking. Thanks also go to Scott and Carla Hellyer for their much appreciated assistance. We couldn’t do it without you. It truly takes a village.

A huge line up of people thronged through the arena doors at 8:00 sharp and were welcomed by all the Lion’s Head Hospital Auxiliary members. Then the shopping immediately started. Sold signs emerged on furniture pieces before that last of the line got through the doors.

There were amazing items this year. One gentleman scooped up train sets. Furniture flew out of the back doors. Numerous items in the tools section this year found new homes. And, as always, a few mystery items inspired ‘what is it?’ debates. Quite quickly, though, it was obvious that bare spots were appearing. Every single plant at the entrance sold. Yay. Good to know that the plants all found good homes this year and numerous items found new homes and new purposes.

So, what happens to the funds that are raised?

As you are likely aware, the minute you add the word “medical” to any item the prices begin to skyrocket. Nothing medically related is cheap, that is for sure. That is why fundraising is so important. This year some of the items that are going to be purchased include a blanket warmer, a GlideScope and funds toward a barrier free shower. The blanket warmer and barrier free shower are self explanatory but what in heaven’s name is a GlideScope? It gives medical personnel a real time video view of the airway which assists when intubation is necessary. Anyone who follows medical dramas is aware of how necessary that is in ensuring a patient’s airway is clear. Breathing is, after all, pretty important.

Congratulations are extended to this year’s LHHA Bursary winner, Sahara Weatherhead, who will be pursuing PSW studies at Georgian College. The award was presented at Bruce Peninsula District School’s Secondary Grad ceremony held June 27, 2024.

So thank you, one and all, for your continued support of keeping health care close to home.

Remember to drop in to the LHHA Used Bookstore, located at Christ Church on Main Street in Lion’s Head. Summer hours have been added so you can drop in Wednesdays, 11:00 until 1:00 and Saturdays, 10:00 until 1:00. Nothing says summer like picking up and reading a good book.

Keep in mind that our clothing drive is coming up in late September so start putting aside those gently loved pieces that you no longer need, use, or (let’s be honest) fit. Stay tuned for the actual date in upcoming issues of the paper. In the meantime, stay safe and stay healthy.
