Container Gardening 2.0
Submitted by Joan Regan
Finally got out for a stroll in the garden. WOW so many containers – I must count them, probably over fifty. But with the bad soil and all the rocks, containers sure do the trick.
All my extra large ones have planted pots inside of them. Potted up with perennials, mostly Hostas, but Ferns, Coneflowers and other shade lovers as well. The soil in these smaller containers is the same 2/3 good soil 1/3 mulch with two handfuls of compost. I mix all together in my wheelbarrow.
Good drainage is another thing to make sure of. My containers all have good drainage with holes in the bottom, covered first with a layer or two of landscape fabric to keep the slugs and weeds out.
Another hint: when using extra large containers I will put a pot in a pot. That’s when I will use the yucky soil etc. to take up the space. This has been working very well for some time. It also leaves some space if I want to pop in one or two annuals for some colour.
After the tidy up it is “sit & wait”, but Son Scot has all the chairs and glider in place, so the coffee is hot and it’s time to enjoy sitting “In The Garden”.
Happy Gardening,
Joni
