“Somewhere To Go, Something To Do, Someone To Talk To”

April 1 marked the official anniversary of the Bruce Men’s Shed (BMS) organization. From a humble start as an unknown entity by one member, our group has grown substantially to count 90 today. Over the winter many regulars went south for months at a time and yet our weekly visits climbed with new men coming out. Word of mouth brings new faces in, and they in turn bring in others they feel would also enjoy the Monday morning coffees.

Our group currently has no membership fees and we welcome any men interested to come out to join us. For people in Owen Sound and Collingwood areas, Men’s Sheds are also in startup mode as the idea of “somewhere to go, something to do, someone to talk to” catches on.

There are many activities that different organizations offer here on the Bruce Peninsula, such as card games, darts, cornhole, hiking and more. Woodworking can now be added to that list. So many BMS members have great workshops at home and opened them to us to gather on Project Days. So far, we have produced bird houses, bat houses, and cornhole boards as group events. We have other plans in the works, stay tuned!

Marg Glendon of Bruce Trail Conservancy (Peninsula Club) organized with teacher Sarah Peacock of Bruce Peninsula District School to present a series of lessons about birds this past month. One of the lessons involved having the Grade 7 students assemble bird houses. One of Bruce Men’s Shed members had approached Hayes Timber (adjacent to Wilson’s Home Hardware) about material for the houses and was happy to pick up the donated material. Thank you very much to Hayes for this! On April 4 a group of BMS members guided the students to assemble the bird houses at the school. Pictures of this event can be found on Facebook under Bruce Peninsula DS.
