Photo: Over the week of January 8th, the old Peacock’s Foodland building in Tobermory was demolished. The area “will be a park/green space in the summer months for public use, and will be a dry dock/winter boat storage for our boats in the winter months” said Griffin Salen of Blue Heron Company.
In 1974, Ron, Barb and their son Rick Peacock purchased what was known then as “Haythorne’s Grocery” from Ethel and Bill Haythorne. The original store had been operating at 9 Bay Street since the 1960s and officially became a Foodland store in the year 2000. This month, Peacock’s Foodland is celebrating their 1st anniversary at the new location on highway 6, as well as their 50th anniversary of serving the community.
