Death Café October 21st – Normalizing Discussions About Death
Submitted by Rev. Sheryl Spencer
On October 21, at 2:00 p.m., Tobermory United will host a Death Café, an opportunity to join in a facilitated conversation about issues surrounding death.
It may sound morbid, but Death Cafés are part of an international movement to normalize talking about death. As facilitator RoseAnne Desmarais writes, “Death is something we all have in common but are afraid to talk about.” The belief within the Death Café movement is that talking about death actually helps us to live our best life. RoseAnne Desmarais is a certified grief educator and end-of-life death doula. She is passionate about her work, and we are blessed to have her come to Tobermory to facilitate this workshop. All are welcome to attend. No registration is required.
On October 8, we celebrate a special Thanksgiving service. So much in our lives comes ‘gratis’ – sunshine, rain, the ability of plants and trees to grow. Do we ever offer enough thanks? Being able to express gratitude is crucial to one’s wellbeing, especially in hard times, and so we celebrate Thanksgiving, not just as a holiday, but as a vital practice. All services at Tobermory United are at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays.
Meanwhile, at Tobermory United, we’re beginning to gear up for the St. Nicholas Bazaar. Mark your calendars for November 25 to attend this treasured event that ushers in the holiday season.
Rev. Sheryl Spencer is minister at Tobermory United Church.
