On Saturday July 29th, OPP Auxiliary Staff Sgt. Tom Buckley and OPP Auxiliary Sgt. Thomas Watkins, were outside of Peacock’s Foodland for the “Stuff the Cruiser” Food Drive with grocery items and cash going to the Tobermory Food Bank.
The donation of grocery items weighed in at 565 lbs. and cash donations were just over $500. This is the highest total of food and cash collected by this effort.
The Tobermory Food Bank wish to extend very big thank you to the two “Toms” for devoting their Saturday to help those most in need in our Community.
As always, the residents of Tobermory were very generous in their donations, but being held in the summer, seasonal residents and visitors were also most generous. People going into Peacock’s would stop and ask what was needed most and would return with arms and buggies of donations.
The Stuff the Cruiser came at a time when our shelves were getting bare and the cash donations really helped, as just that previous week, we had one of our freezers stop working and we lost a lot of frozen meat. The cash donations helped in replacing the meat that was lost, and with Rick Peacock’s generous pricing, our meat is now replenished.
This is the first time that the Tobermory Food Bank has been open in July and August every Tuesday with regular hours. We were concerned we wouldn’t have enough volunteers to staff the shifts and pick up “Food Rescue” from Peacock’s. We have been very fortunate as we have had many new volunteers come forward to help with both needs – some of those volunteers being seasonal residents.
Food Insecurity is still increasing, and the support of the Community and beyond allows the Tobermory Food Bank to continue our work. Thank you to everyone who helped “Stuff the Cruiser” and all who support the Food Bank throughout the year.
