In the spring of 2021, The Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association orchestrated the planting of 5,000 trees to commemorate the 90th birthday of Isobel Ganton, a long-time cottager at Lion’s Head. The planting team included staff from the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula and Lands & Forest Consulting. The Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry, the Bruce County Forestry Technician and an Environmental Geotechnologist also participated in the project.

A news article appeared in the Bruce Peninsula Press on page 28 of the June 9 – 23, 2020 edition telling the history of Isobel’s grandfather, Charles Pedwell. Charles harvested lumber from the Bruce Peninsula in the early 1900’s and it was Isobel’s wish to replenish the forest to combat the devastating effects of climate change. Isobel lived to learn that her dream of replenishing the trees on the Bruce had become a reality, but sadly passed away in December of 2020, never having had the opportunity to visit the site of her legacy.

The family felt that a signpost displaying the news article would be an appropriate way to honour Isobel’s life and pass the story on to future generations. Tanya Early, Graphic Designer at the Tobermory Press, created an impressive poster and Troy Cameron of the MNBP Public Works department arranged to have the sign solidly installed.

The 6.5-acre municipal property is located on the east side of West Drive, just north of Little Pike Bay Road.
