Taking my early morning garden stroll, coffee in hand, I am really starting to notice how everything is popping up overnight, especially most of my BF Hostas, opening up their curled leaves and perennials saying Good Morning stretching up to the sunlight. The garden is awake and I am one Happy Gardener.
Quite a few of my Hostas that made their appearance early have frost bite. Their leaves are not wilting, but shrivelled up. Actually they look kind of cool. I have not noticed this before, but we did have a come and go Spring. They’re looking kind of quirky, but quirky is good.
The tulips, daffodils and crocus are ready for bed so I lay them down and cover them with a bit of mulch hiding their messy look. It’s time to throw on some mulch and compost on all the gardens – a much needed boost in the Spring. I would have done this sooner, but had a big fight with that *&^#$@*&!^$#* Garlic Mustard. Both mulch and compost are important to our gardens. One feeds the gardens and one helps to retain moisture and keeps the soil loose.
That Garlic Mustard is still giving me a work out. A bit of rain and it’s off and running again. So far, I have only noticed it in one spot and I am doing a daily walk around looking for it all around our property as well as out the back. Garlic Mustard look out! You will NOT win against this little old grey haired Granny.
The “Ditch Ferns” are looking great as well as the “Ditch Lilies”. Not many are fans of those orange Lilies, but I like them, just not in my gardens. I plop them here and there in spots around and when they bloom they brighten up a corner. I have been planting some along with my perennial Geraniums. Both are aggressive growers but they’re fine over in my side garden.
So, my coffee is hot, second cup of the day, and I’m going out for my garden walk. Out to my “Happy Place”. All is good out here and I’m enjoying the quiet and the solitude, taking deep breaths. Yup, all is good.
Stay Safe Garden Friends.
Happy Gardening, Happy Spring,
Joni
