The Northern Bruce Peninsula Community Support Advisory Action Committee met at the Northern Bruce Peninsula Municipal Offices on Wednesday February 12th to listen to speaker, Jan Chamberlain who described different types of housing arrangements in Owen Sound. Jan is a member of the Owen Sound Housing Committee and original member who helped form the Council on Aging Grey Bruce after the first Senior Summit in 2014.
The lack of affordable and available housing is a concern on the Northern Bruce Peninsula for young families, workers on the peninsula and senior residents. Although there are no easy answers to the shortage of available housing and the increase in homelessness in Ontario, there are several developers available to build more affordable housing and accessible housing suitable for retired seniors.
The Senior Summit 2019 held in Owen Sound in September has released a report about the highlights of the summit and the concerns of the participants. Over 200 participants attended. They were asked, what are you most concerned about in Grey Bruce? The answers included health care services, transportation, housing, isolation and loneliness, affordability, demand of an aging population on the community and diversity and inclusiveness. They were asked, what excites you most about Grey Bruce? The answer was community characteristics and the people, the availability for growth of services, recreation and natural environment, arts, culture and social opportunities and partnerships and collaboration to move forward.
The Northern Bruce Peninsula Community Support Committee will continue to address the many concerns of the residents in Northern Bruce Peninsula by creating partnership and collaborating with other committees and groups to educate and inform the residents about the most recent research and information available for aging well and safely.
Next meeting will be on Wednesday March 11th at the NBP Municipal Offices from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The topic for the meeting relates to wellness and safety as one makes final decisions for themselves and/or a loved one. Speakers will be Brenda Scott from George Funeral Home in Lion’s Head who will address powers of attorney, final plans for a celebration of life and answer questions. Nancy Forgrave from Bruce Peninsula Hospice will talk about the new program called “Stepping Stones” and hear about the “scattering garden” in Lion’s Head available behind Christ Church.
