As of Tuesday September 3rd, the Tobermory Food Bank will be open every Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. As fall approaches the demand increases. If you are thinking about donating items, please consider chunky style soups, canned peas, corn and potatoes. Also packaged pasta dinners and hamburger helper, and rice. Peanut Butter, cereal, and breakfast type bars are needed, along with Juice boxes, individual pudding and fruit cups. Toilet tissue, paper towel, and Kleenex are expensive to buy, so donations of those items along with dish and laundry detergent, help our clients stretch their very limited grocery budget. Pets need to eat as well, and when shopping if you pick up a food item for them, that is most welcome. Donations can be dropped off at the Post Office, or call 519-596-2333 to arrange a convenient time for donors to bring to the Food Bank.
A recent letter submitted to the Bruce Peninsula Press by Public Health Dieticians from the Grey Bruce Health Unit, reported that 15.1% of households in Ontario reported inadequate access to food because of income. Also 21.2% of children under 18 were living in food insecure households. A segment of the senior population that are on low fixed incomes face the same food insecurity.
As been said so many times in our articles, we in Tobermory live in a most supportive and caring community and the outpouring of generosity is amazing. From individuals, organizations, Churches and donation gathering initiatives. The donations from the proceeds of the monthly Trivia night at the Legion are a wonderful example. The local support we receive allows us to continue our work of assisting those most in need in our community.
With fall approaching, perhaps you might be considering devoting some of your time to volunteering, please consider the Tobermory Food Bank. It involves very little time commitment and is most rewarding. If you have any questions about volunteering, or any questions about the Food Bank, please call Linda at 519-596-2333 or come out to our monthly meeting the first Tuesday of the month at 12 noon at the Meeting Place.
