On May 31st, Bruce Peninsula Health Services Foundation will be marking a very special anniversary with the Schmidt Family of Sauble Beach; the 25th Annual Troy Schmidt Memorial Golf Tournament.
Over the past 25 years, this tournament has raised thousands of dollars for our local hospitals in Wiarton and Lion’s Head, and has assisted in funding priority needs at our regional hospital in Owen Sound. The running of this successful tournament over the last 25 years is a tremendous accomplishment, and is one that is near and dear to the hearts of BPHSF board members and staff, past and present. Year after year, many volunteers, sponsors, staff, friends and family have come together for a day of camaraderie, healthy competition, a great meal and to provide support for local health care, all in honour of Troy’s memory.
With great thought and care, BPHS Foundation board and staff have made the very difficult decision that the 25th anniversary will culminate BPHSF’s offering of the Troy Schmidt Memorial Golf Tournament. Happily, the Schmidt family has expressed that they will continue on with organizing the tournament after this year.
Justin Schmidt (son of Troy) recently remarked on behalf of his family, “we would like to thank all the participants, dedicated volunteers, Foundation employees and Sauble Golf & Country Club staff. Without all your hard work and donations the Troy Schmidt Memorial golf tournament would not have been nearly as successful. A special thank you goes to the owners of Sauble Golf and Country Club, who have given up their course for the day over the past 25 years. Thank you Jack, Bob, and now Paul and Ellen. The past 25 years have not been easy with the loss for family and friends of Troy Schmidt, but with this golf tournament, it has kept his memory alive.”
MPP, Bill Walker recently shared “the Troy Schmidt Memorial has always been a special golf tournament. I have had the privilege to organize the tournament when I worked for the Foundation and to participate as a player and it has been an honour to be involved in both capacities. The funds raised for healthcare in our community are a tribute to Troy and his family and serve as a wonderful legacy. Thank you to everyone who has supported over the years!”
Bev Boswell, former BPHSF Executive Director also shared her thoughts on this special annual event; “I did not have the privilege of knowing Troy but over my fourteen years as ED of BPHS Foundation I was very fortunate to meet several of Troy’s family members and friends. The tournament was an opportunity for people to share stories and memories and I always enjoyed hearing these. We are very grateful to those that have supported the Troy Schmidt Memorial Golf Tournament. What the family did, passing the tournament to BPHS Foundation to assist with medical equipment purchases, was a wonderful thing. Unfortunately I don’t know the exact figure raised over the 25 years but I do know that even after their loss, the family of Troy Schmidt performed a very generous act in choosing BPHS Foundation as a charity to receive funds. Justin and Erin, your father would be so proud of the adults you have become and very thankful to the family that supported you. Troy’s memory will live on!”

As a resident and/or business owner in our community, excellent health care services are sure to be a priority to you, as they are to us. Through your generous donations and participation in our special events such as this charity golf tournament, Bruce Peninsula Health Services Foundation is able to raise funds to purchase equipment for the Wiarton and Lion’s Head Hospitals, and priority needs at our regional hospital in Owen Sound. Help us keep care close to home while enjoying a day on the golf course.
