100th Anniversary Celebration at Tobermory Legion July 17

Hello July! The weather has been beautiful and Tobermory is in full swing!

July 17th we will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion! A celebration will be held at the Tobermory Legion Branch 290 starting at 3:00pm. Come and celebrate 100 years of an excellent organization

BBQs are scheduled for August 29 and September 12, after the meat draw, which starts at 4:00pm. You can get a burger and a bag of chips for $15.00. 

Join the fun with DJ Maxx starting at 9:30pm to 1:00am (last call is 12:30am). Happening on July 24 (Country and Western Night), August 1, August 8, August 22 (Summerween – come in your costumes) and September 5. Come on out and dance like no one is watching! There is a $10.00 cover charge. 

Darts is 7:00pm on Thursdays, Meat Draws are Saturday at 4:00pm. Ladies Auxiliary Bingo is at the Tobermory Community Centre on Wednesdays. Doors open at 6:30pm with a start time of 7:00pm. All are welcome to attend. 

The Legion is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 3:00pm. 

Remembering Thomas Andrew HOPKINS

From the Legion Ontario Command Military Service Recognition Book – Thomas Andrew HOPKINS was born in Tobermory on February 17, 1887. He worked as a Fireman on two steamers before joining the Army. On December 29, 1915, he enlisted in the Army and served with the 160th Bruce Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, Canadian Machine Gun Corps in Canada, England and Europe during WW1. 

He was discharged on January 3, 1919 and went to work in fishing and lumbering. He also worked on a guide boat. Thomas was the Lightkeeper at Big Tub Lighthouse from 1928 until it closed in 1952. He was a charter member of the Tobermory Legion Branch 290. 

Thomas passed away on January 9, 1963. Unfortunately, there is no picture of Thomas to accompany this bio.
