The Lion’s Head & District Food Bank distributed 14 very large hampers to families on the Peninsula with school-aged children. 33 children enjoyed many nutritional snack items, as well as fresh fruits and veggies, to munch on over the week long break. Cereal donated by the Peninsula Family Health Team members was also included. This was a first time project for the Food Bank which was appreciated very much by the families receiving the extra food.

Many community fundraisers have taken place in the first quarter of 2026. The Lion’s Head Curling Club donated $260.00 from their January bonspiel turkey shoot. Brenda Nelson presented this money on behalf of the curling club. Mary Hewton from The Booth Takeout & Catering donated hot dogs which were sold at the Family Day Skate held at the Lion’s Head Arena. Bruce and Jan Ahrens and Todd and Yvonne May contributed to this event as well. Thank you to all of you for thinking of the Food Bank!

The Ferndale, Lion’s Head & District Lions Club donated a hefty $1,178.00 to the Food Bank, while the Rotary Club and Christ Church donated $1,000.00 from their Shrove Tuesday Pancake dinner. John Newitt from The Men’s Breakfast Club donated $500.00 as well. Traditionally the months after Christmas are lean where donations are concerned. Not so in 2026! We truly do live in a very generous and caring community!

One community member turned her 2025 Scene points into a Sobey’s e-gift card which can be used at our local Hellyer’s Foodland. This was a wonderful idea! There are so many ways to donate food items, gift cards or money to the Food Bank. All are received with thanks. It is a busy time of year for food banks with increasing heat costs, travel costs and food costs to name only a few reasons for food bank use.
