Climate Comment for June 2026
Submitted by Bill Caulfeild-Browne
The mean temperature for June was 15.6C, about one degree above normal. Means however can be deceiving as they mix the “too cold” with the “too hot”. The month started out cool with the mercury as low as 5.8C but recovered in the second week to give us highs in the twenties – the 9th saw 25.1C.
The third week saw cool days again with some highs barely making the teens. The 18th only reached 13.9C which is quite cold for mid-June. The last week gradually warmed up and the hottest day occurred on the 30th at 28.6C. If it were not for the last few days the month would have been below normal.
Rainfall was 87mm which is higher than the norm of 68mm. Most of it fell in three deluges – 29mm (over one inch) on the 6th, 18mm on the 18th and 11mm on the 25th.
Winds were predominantly from the south and the west-northwest, normal for June. Our highest wind was 47 km/hr on the 12th. What was not normal was the stillness on the 28th when the average wind speed was less than one kilometre per hour! No wonder it felt so muggy.
Our weather was pretty representative of the Province as a whole with the north a bit warmer and the south a bit cooler. The rain storm that reached us on the 18th caused extensive flooding in Toronto along with multiple traffic accidents.
The outlook for July is for warmer than usual weather, which is true for the first few days!
