Got household goods you no longer need? Has spring cleaning resulted in a purge of excess items? You are in luck! The Tobermory Thrift Shop will be open for donations May 15, 16 and 17, 1 to 4 p.m.

After the Victoria day weekend, the Thrift Shop will continue to receive donations Monday to Saturday (except Wednesday) all summer long and will open its doors for sales on those same days of the week starting on June 6.

The Thrift Shop is a long-standing initiative of Tobermory United Church and is completely volunteer run. The presence of the Thrift Shop enables a plethora of good things to unfold – funding for Tobermory Community Outreach, which provides emergency assistance to community members in need; two complimentary shopping days per season for food-bank clients; financial support for other community groups; and the presence of Tobermory United as a community hub year-round. As well, when the season ends and the Thrift Shop is packed up, items that are left are shared among Safe ‘n Sound in Owen Sound, the Lion’s Head Hospital Auxiliary’s Annual Clothing Drive and various year-round Thrift Shops.

If you’d like to be part of this win-win-win-win-win situation, the Thrift Shop is always looking for volunteers. Most pick one day of the week (closed Sundays) and do a shift from 1 to 4 on that day. Some volunteers do more shifts than that and some do less, but all are welcome! If you’d like more information about volunteering (it’s fun and social!) please contact volunteer coordinator Steve Lindsay at tobermorydreamin@gmail.com.

On May 24 at Tobermory United, we celebrate Pentecost and also the revelation of the final set of altar decorations that the fabric artist Jo Lane has been creating for our sanctuary. These altar decorations, often depicting local images, are becoming treasured components of the worship space, and we are ever grateful for a bequest from Jan MacDonald, who died in early 2023, for their creation.

On June 7, Tobermory United celebrates Pride Sunday, a festive and highly anticipated service in our church year.
