Stopped in Awe: News from Tobermory United

Submitted by Rev. Sheryl Spencer

The Tobermory Thrift Shop, a community initiative of Tobermory United Church, will be receiving donations May 15, 16 and 17 (Victoria Day weekend) 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., and then Monday to Saturday (except Wednesday) from then on. In fact, the Thrift Shop is thrilled to announce that for the 2026 season, it will be open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays – for both sales and donations, with the sales season beginning on June 6. The Thrift Shop will continue to be closed on Wednesdays for sorting.

The Tobermory Thrift Shop, located within the former settlement church at 7101 Highway 6, is a long tradition in the community. It’s a win-win-win-win-win situation that not only provides funds for Tobermory United Church and Tobermory Community Outreach, but also contributes to a circular economy, ensuring that household goods are used over and over again before they become waste. The Thrift Shop is completely run by volunteers, and anyone who would like to join the team is welcome! It’s fun! On April 18, Tobermory United presented a concert, Jeff Bird Plays the Music of Hildegard von Bingen. About 90 people from near and far attended the event, a transcendent experience that was meditative, healing and profound. “Inspiring” is what most people are saying about this legendary musician’s interpretations of the songs of the twelfth-century mystic.

Tobermory United is grateful for all those who attended and for a Mission and Service grant from the United Church of Canada that supported the concert. We are inspired to hold more such events in the future. In fact, local musicians often perform during worship services at Tobermory United. You can hear Janet Whittington, well known at Tobermory open mic, during the service on May 3.

Tobermory United’s annual Spring Chicken BBQ will be held May 13th! Tickets include half a barbecued chicken, a baked potato, sour cream, coleslaw and dessert. Tickets are $25.00 and can be purchased by e-mailing tucbbqtickets@outlook.com or by calling 519-851-3411, 519-803-2483 or, for dinners delivered to Lion’s Head, 519-793-3119. Dinners may be picked up in a drive-through fashion from the church at 5 Brock St between 4:30 and 6:00 on May 13th. Volunteers are also welcome for this event!

Tobermory United was part of the team that contributed to Tobermory Community Outreach’s “To the Tub with Love” dinner on April 16. This dinner was held for the whole community, a celebration of Spring, but also a thank you for the support of Tobermory Community Outreach. About 175 people enjoyed ham, scalloped and mash potatoes, corn, rolls, salads and desserts – and a great time visiting with friends and neighbours!

Tobermory Community Outreach is supported by the four Tobermory churches and provides support to the community, including emergency financial aid as well as a driving program for those who require assistance getting to medical appointments.
