Many residents of the Northern Bruce have questions about the future of housing and whether the right kind of housing for a healthy and economically sustainable community can be attained.
You are invited to come out to the Parks Canada Visitor Centre on Thursday April 2nd at 1pm and relax in comfortable seating with great sound and watch an informative film together. Afterwards, dive deeper into the conversation with film producer Brian Doucet and see evidence of real Canadian housing solutions.
The Sources of Knowledge (SOK) and The Meeting Place (TMP), two not-for-profit organizations in Tobermory, are co-hosting this exciting and important housing event on April 2, 1:00 – 3:30pm at the Bruce Peninsula National Park Visitor Centre theatre.
We are thrilled to be presenting the new documentary film “Thinking Beyond the Market”: A Film About Genuinely Affordable Housing produced by Brian Doucet. This is a film about Canadian housing solutions and not just urban. Brian Doucet will be at our screening and is a fully engaged, applied researcher in housing from the University of Waterloo. He is a leading expert in the affordable housing movement we are all talking about.
Dr. Doucet took some time last week to speak with us. I asked him what made him take on a project to produce a film about affordable housing. He said he has been a housing researcher, studying housing for a long time. He said he had the idea to make research accessible to the public. Making a film was the ultimate thing.
We asked about why the film is important to the general public. Brian said “everyone is talking about housing” but do we have all the right information. He wants the public and the not-for-profit sectors to help shift priorities toward affordable housing solutions. He reflects that many Canadians never imagined they would fall into a housing crisis. When asked what key take away messages the film presents, he says understanding the value of public land for affordable housing; and the message that citizens can organize, vote and demand change. The film should also complement local housing initiatives and people should be able to see their community and the Canadian context in the film. Dr. Doucet will lead a Q & A segment following the film so bring a pen and paper with you to jot down your questions as the film unfolds
Our goal, as local community organizations is to raise community awareness, share knowledge and prepare ground work for considering some of the opportunities presented in the recently launched Bruce County Housing Targets Report.
This is a free event with refreshments provided; donations are welcome. Come early to get a seat. The organizers from SOK and TMP would like to thank the Princess Hotel for their generous donation of accommodation for our guest Dr. Brian Doucet.
