Farmers’ Markets on the Saugeen Peninsula are in full swing now, and Lion’s Head Farmers’ Market (LHFM) is working toward becoming a zero-waste market.

During a recent interview with Charlene Jordan, LHFM Manager, I learned more about how LHFM is already promoting waste reduction. For example, all vendors are encouraged to consider food wrap which is compostable or reusable.

As LHFM Manager, Charlene wants to set an example and has started the TAB LAB initiative – Take-A-Bag, Leave-A-Bag. Like Garden in Thyme, LHFM now provides a TAB LAB container to leave your clean, reusable shopping bags. Forgot your shopping bag? No problem – take a bag! You can find the TAB LAB container on the table at the front entrance of the LHFM. LHFM patrons love this initiative – sharing their many compliments with Charlene.

As a new waste reduction initiative, we want to shine a light on the Lion’s Head Farmers’ Market Tab-Lab to the Saugeen Peninsula Reduces Waste – BYO program.

You can choose to do even more – bring your cutlery. If you are purchasing some of those delicious food options for a snack at the beach or for your hike – consider bringing your own cutlery and take it home to wash. One great on-the-go cutlery idea – Bruce Peninsula Environmental Group (BPEG) sells a very affordable compact cutlery/napkin kit – complete with fork, knife, spoon and napkin. While you are at the Lion’s Head Beach, refill your personal water bottle, rather than purchasing or bringing single use beverage containers. Each small action helps make big changes.

If you are a Farmers’ Market vendor on the Saugeen Peninsula, contact Owen or Marg to share your story about BYO, or talk about how you can promote reusable food and beverage containers. We don’t have all the answers, but we are willing to work together in finding a way to reduce food and beverage packaging waste on the Saugeen Peninsula.
