Plants, Plants and More Plants

Submitted by Cathy Viscount

Now that spring has finally decided to arrive and our local flora has decided it is safe to come out of its winter slumber, the Lion’s Head Hospital Auxiliary (LHHA) is putting together its annual 1001 Perennials Plant sale. All the plants sold at this sale come from local gardens so you can be confident that they are well suited to our climate. Each year the selection varies. We generally have hostas, day lilies and a selection of sedums but until the actual day of the sale, well, it’s always a surprise to see what you will discover.

The sale will take place Saturday, June 7, between 9:00 a.m. and noon. We will be in the grassy area between the arena in Lion’s Head and the Friendship Club on Tackabury Street. Come early for the best selection. If there are any community gardeners who would like to donate plants to the sale, please contact Linda Holden at 519-793-4249 or lmholden32@gmail.com.

Our first summer long weekend kicked off with our Fish Fry and what a great turnout we had. The weather was less than festive but the dinner, desserts, music and camaraderie made it the perfect reflection of everything we associate with summertime. Huge thanks go to everyone who came out and supported us and to our sponsors, Hellyers Foodland in Lion’s Head and The Hungry Hiker in Ferndale. We so appreciate your generosity.

Did anyone notice my error in my last article? Yes, I admit it, I made a mistake and a serious one. A month after the 1001 Perennials Plant Sale our next fundraising event is our epic Yard Sale. The event happens this year Saturday, July 5 and Sunday, July 6. Dropping off donated goods is always the day before, this year on Friday, July 4. I won’t confuse you by repeating my error. Just remember, donations can be dropped off at the arena Friday, July 4. A list of items we cannot accept will be listed closer to the event. Please keep in mind that we cannot accept donations earlier because we simply have nowhere to store them.

Don’t forget about our bookstore. By the time you read this the bookstore will already have opened for the summer. Yes, the bookstore opened Saturday, May 17 from 11:00am until 2:00pm. Come by and select your summer reading. The bookstore is located on the lower level of Christ Church on Main Street in Lion’s Head.

Welcome back to our seasonal community and congratulations to our year-round community for having survived a most memorable, miserable winter. Summer is short but sweet and we look forward to seeing you at our fundraising events. Together we can keep health care close to home.
