SK-Grade 3 After-School Program

Submitted by Jen Williams

The Meeting Place provides a welcoming place for the children and youth of our community to gather, learn, share, and connect. One approach that we utilise to achieve this is our after-school program SOAR. The SOAR program is geared towards children from SK to grade 3. The program runs every Tuesday, starting in November and concluding in April.

Each week the children participate in a physical activity, either inside or out depending on the weather. During these activities we focus on both skill and team building while fostering a healthy sense of competition.

The second component of the program is to provide a creative outlet and let the children express themselves in a multitude of ways. The children usually take home their creations, providing a sense of accomplishment and positive self worth. They are proud to show their families what they have created.

We often perform an experiment as well. The experiments encourage the children to ask questions about the world around them and to seek the answers. These experiments are hands on and sometimes get a little messy, which seems to be the kids’ favourite part.

Of course, we can’t forget the after-school snack! We strive to provide a healthy and delicious snack to help fuel the children so they can do their best in all our activities.

Our hope for the program is that the children can feel a larger sense of our community and to know that they are an important part of it. Our no-cost program runs every Tuesday from 3-4:30. If anyone is interested in registering their child or in becoming a volunteer, please contact Jen Williams via email youth@tobermorymeetingplace.com.
