Stopped in Awe: News from Tobermory United
Submitted by Rev. Sheryl Spencer
The snow may not be on the ground yet, but preparations are underway to celebrate Advent and Christmas at Tobermory United.
Crafts are being made, decorations planned, lists drawn up, and baking created, all to prepare for the annual St. Nicholas Bazaar, which will be held November 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00p.m. at the Tobermory Community Centre. The bazaar features a café, lunch, local vendors, crafts, a silent auction, Christmas baking, a nearly-new table, one-of-a-kind treasures created with rustic and vintage materials by Northern Twisted Roots and, most of all, a time to mingle with friends and neighbours! Will St. Nicholas make an appearance this year?
Anyone interested in contributing or helping out with this beloved community event is welcome to call the church at 519-596-2394 or e-mail tobermoryunitedchurch@eastlink.ca.
Tobermory United will offer a book study in December on the book Season’s Greetings: Christmas Letters from Those Who Where There, by Ruth L. Boling. Season’s Greetings is an imaginative series of letters, written with insight and careful Biblical scholarship, that shed light on the ancient and contemporary meaning of Christmas. Copies of the book are available at Tobermory United for $20.00 each. Gatherings will take place December 6, 13 and 20 at 10:00 a.m. in person at Tobermory United or via Zoom.
Christmas with Peninsula Musicians and Friends will take place December 13 at 7:00 p.m. at Tobermory United. This is a community event where local musicians such as Brian Taylor, Dominik Franken and friends, the Tobermory United Church choir and many others will offer a musical celebration of the season. Funds raised from the event will go to support the Golden Dawn Senior Citizen Home.
On November 10, Tobermory United will join with all the other churches of Tobermory to celebrate a Service of Remembrance at Light and Life Chapel, 7346 Highway 6, Tobermory.
Rev. Sheryl Spencer is the minister at Tobermory United Church, 5 Brock St. She has office hours every Friday morning from 9:30 to noon. All are welcome to drop by for a chat or just to say hi!
