The Tobermory Food Bank was started by a community group of dedicated volunteers in 2008. Prior to that Tobermory United Church assisted those needing help feeding themselves or their families. At that time a phrase we often hear now was not commonly used, that is Food Insecurity. We know from a report this year from Grey Bruce Public Health that in Grey Bruce 17.5% of households are Food Insecure. The Tobermory Food Bank is open every Tuesday year-round from 1-3 p.m. at The Meeting Place, Tobermory to assist those coping with Food Insecurity.

As we have said many times, we could not do this without the generous support of individuals, organizations and Churches. As recently as in the article in the August 28th Edition of the Press, the Summer Stuff the Cruiser Event collected 163 kg of Food and over 500 dollars. Thank you to everyone who donated and that included many summer visitors.

If you wish to support the Tobermory Food Bank there are many ways to donate. You can mail a cheque to P.O. Box 144 Tobermory, ON N0H 2R0, or by e-transfer at tobermoryfoodbank@gmail.com with an accompany e-mail with name and mailing address. Also, you can make a cash donation at the check-outs at Peacock’s Foodland. Donations over $20 will receive a tax receipt.

Thanksgiving is approaching, and it is time for those needing assistance in having a holiday meal to sign up for a Thanksgiving Hamper from the Food Bank. You can sign up at the Tobermory Food Bank during operating hours, or by calling Linda at 519-596-2333. If you know of someone who could use a Hamper, but may be reluctant to sign up, please encourage them to do so. You do not have to be a regular client of the Food Bank to receive a Hamper.

As Fall is upon us and you are looking to give some time volunteering, we would love to have you join our dedicated and busy team of volunteers.

One of our most dedicated volunteers Jennifer Dewey and her husband Ron are moving away. Jennifer gave so much of her time and energy in fulfilling many roles at the Tobermory Food Bank. When looking to how we would fill the gaps with her leaving, it is taking two people to take up her duties, and that does not include the many shifts Jennifer took on Food Bank days. All of the Tobermory Food Bank Team wish Jennifer and Ron all the best in their move and our deepest gratitude for all the many hours Jennifer has devoted helping the community.
