Residents and cottagers expressed their concerns about a fishing vessel that sank, leaking oil, at the Government Dock in Stokes Bay in the early morning of September 5, 2024. By that afternoon the Canadian Coast Guard had deployed a containment boom around the spill and a preliminary survey of the spill was conducted.

The Communications Deptartment of the Canadian Coast Guard issued the following statement on 6 September 2024:

“The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) responded to a report of a fishing vessel sinking at a dock in Stokes Bay, Ontario, on September 5.

Environmental response equipment has been deployed to encircle the vessel and help contain any pollutants that may seep into the water while crews work to remove pollutants using specialized equipment. The size of the spill and plan for vessel recovery are yet to be determined.

The CCG conducted a helicopter overflight for aerial pollution observation, and CCG personnel remained on location on Friday to monitor the spill site.

The ongoing response effort involves collaboration with Environment and Climate Change Canada, Canada Wildlife Service, Transport Canada, the Ontario Provincial Police, and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.”
