Lawrence Beagan undertook double duty at our September Breakfast, first running the kitchen and then later providing attendees with an eye-opening discussion of Radon Gas on the Bruce Peninsula, and potential levels occurring in homes.

Radon gas is radioactive and is the number 1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. Lawrence first became interested when he decided to check the presence and concentration in his own home on Big Tub Road and found levels above those considered safe.

The presentation has been nicely summarized by this paper’s publisher in the Opinion article published in the previous issue of The Bruce Peninsula Press (Issue #15 September 12 to October 3, 2023). I urge anyone interested to read that article.

Our next breakfast on October 14th will see the return of our popular “Ladies’ Breakfast” inviting spouses, girlfriends, and all interested ladies who may wish to see us demonstrate our secret hand shake. The Tobermory Legion will be preparing the meal for this event and our guest speaker will be Dr. Brian Taylor with some exciting news of planned developments at the Golden Dawn Senior Citizen Home.

If you’re planning to attend, please reply to Martin at hogarth@auracom.com with the number of tickets required, by October 7th 2023. Reserved tickets can be picked up at the door on the 14th.

Our November 4th breakfast will feature a presentation prepared by the Tobermory Legion (Branch 290) on our local veterans. Leading the presentation will be Shirley Johnstone, Chair of the Legion’s Veteran’s Subcommittee, and Rob Davis who was born in Tobermory and is currently Co-Chair of the St. Edmunds Bruce Peninsula Museum Committee. Tobermory and the former St. Edmunds Township have a rich military history as a large proportion of our citizens had stood forward to serve in numerous wars.
