In The Garden: Hints From A Mrs Gardener

Winter Decorating

Submitted by Joan Regan

My garden is shut down so it is time to start to get festive. NOPE, no xmas stuff ‘til December.

However we did cut down some cedar branches that needed cut, so into the planters and pots they went before the soil was frozen. A few spruce as well. Just the greenery. No Christmas decorating ‘til December. All the branches needed to be cut back anyway so their trimmings are put to use for this season.

Looking ahead I painted some smaller pots bright red to put some greenery in. They will sit on the top of my larger containers with festive greenery. My Xtra Lg. pots have been topped up with a bit of mulch from POD (just to look prettier) and the red pots will sit on top with the Bling in them. Greenery just for now and some Xmas decorations come December. Much easier for this old Gal and I do think they look quite festive. Reason for this is most of the Lg. containers have Hostas in them and I didn’t want to go poking around in them disturbing the roots.

I might just do the same thing come Spring with the few Xtra Lg. planters I have. Hmmm… Sweet Woodruff around the sides and a pretty pot of bright annuals in the middle. STOP IT girl you’re getting way too far ahead of yourself. It’s November remember?

Our gardens are a mix of sun and shade so the bright red begonias look great. STOP.

OK back to Winter decorating. Cut some evergreen boughs from the trees that needed a trimming and they have worked great. It will look very Christmassy come December and the trees got a hair cut to boot. It will look so pretty seeing them from our cozy little house this Winter with all the snow around. I do have to admit, a fresh snowfall is so pretty (Mother Nature’s way of saying sorry to us for the YUCK).

Now I have to go find some more pots to paint before the Snow is too deep.

 Happy “Indoor Gardening” folks,

Joni
