Letter: Senseless Cruelty to Milk Snake

805

My husband and I went to enjoy our properties on the Northern Bruce Peninsula since it was such a beautiful day. Afterwards my husband and I then went for a drive to Lindsay Rd. 30 and Pine Tree Harbour Rd. to see if anything was new, builds, etc.

Along the way we noticed snakes were crossing the roads a Water Snake, Ribbon Snake x 2 and finally we slowed on Pine Tree Harbour Rd. To view a Milk Snake.

I then noticed an ATV approaching and instead of waiting till I moved my vehicle along the ATV driver darted around our vehicle and ran over the Milk Snake. We couldn’t believe it. I just don’t understand why someone would want to purposely be cruel to a living creature. Was it funny?? Not for us. The poor creature writhed around and it’s possible it may survive as it did move along, but maybe it went to die.

So to the man on the ATV with no helmet: you should be ashamed. You’re lucky too it wasn’t a Massasauga Rattlesnake which is protected from harassment etc. as we have a dash cam. Hefty fines for those.

The Bruce Peninsula has so many beautiful creatures. Respect, protect and enjoy them. They are living creatures, just like us.
