Letter: STA Overreach

1155

To the Editor,

We are in compliance with STA requirements. It galls us that only less than 20% of cottage rentals bothered to comply. Was revenue lost? It further galls us that this regulation process was imposed on us.

We put our money, sweat and effort into building, renovating, fixing and maintaining our properties. The municipality puts our sweat and money in their pocket to hire consultants to push through an unpopular agenda. All this as STAs provide knock-on effects to our tourist economy.

Many are Ma and Pa operations that count on these properties to support their retirements. Many felt anxiety prior to the permit and inspection process. Perfectly sound septic systems had to be “inspected” at owner’s expense.

People who took their properties off the cottage rental market had their privacy impinged upon by municipality contracted consultants. Come on.

We hadn’t even received out first cheque before MNBP electronically began formalizing MAT tax payment systems. At least they are efficient.

As for understaffing at City Hall, try making less work for yourselves, council.

Elections are around the corner. Let’s get some fresh perspective on over reach.

Thank you,

Mr. R. Budrys
